What is SVG, and What This Converter Produces
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. A true vector SVG is built from lines, shapes, and curves, which is why it can be scaled to any size and edited point by point in a design tool.
Trace to Vector does exactly that. It groups the PNG's pixels into color regions and fits curves around each one, so the output is built from real paths you can select, recolor, and scale to any size in a design tool — not a picture pretending to be one.
When Tracing Works Well
- Logos, icons, and flat-color illustrations, where a handful of solid regions trace into a handful of clean paths.
- Line art and simple black-and-white graphics.
- Anything you plan to recolor, resize, or edit as paths afterwards.
When to Use Embed as-is Instead
A photograph or a busy, many-colored image will still trace, but it produces far more paths — a simple logo came out as 3 paths in our own tests, while a photo-like image came out as nearly 70. If you only need a file with a .svg extension and don't actually need the picture broken into paths, switch to Embed as-is: it wraps the PNG unchanged instead of generating a large, complex trace of something that was never meant to be a vector.
